Karin & Abner

Doctor and Staff Lunch & Learn

Sustaining Excellence in Your Work & Partnerships

Karin McCay & Abner Euresti

Abner Euresti and Karin McCay have been co-anchoring the 6 and 10 news at KCBD-TV in Lubbock, Texas, since 1980.
They are the longest running anchor team in the country but they also have other responsibilities and individual achievements.

Abner is Managing Editor for KCBD news, the NBC affiliate in Lubbock. It is his job to oversee the evening newscast. Abner provides input in policy decisions and daily news coverage, and has final approval on all news content.

As a reporter, Abner has chronicled historic events in Lubbock from the desegregation of public schools to the closure of Reese Air Force Base.
But his award winning stories have taken him far beyond Lubbock to cover everything from political inaugurations to a devastating earthquake in Mexico City, in addition to one-on-one interviews with 5 U.S. presidents. Abner has also been commended for excellence in education reporting. That includes the Silver Apple Award from the Lubbock Classroom Teachers Association and statewide awards from the Texas State Teachers Association, the Association of Texas Professional Educators and the Texas Parent Teacher Association. Recently, he was asked to give the commencement address for a graduating class at his alma mater, Texas Tech University. His heartfelt advice to those graduates brought a standing ovation.

As a strong advocate for education, Abner is a frequent speaker at schools and related activities. That includes events and mentoring programs that target at-risk students. For that, Abner received a State Board of Education Hero Award.

Karin has been the medical reporter at KCBD for 36 years and produces a segment nightly called Healthwise. Her medical stories have been recognized statewide and nationally over the years. Among her credits, she has earned a Lone Star Emmy. She is also a 17 time winner of an Anson Jones Award, given by the Texas Medical Association.

Karin and Abner have also been recognized together many times. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences gave them the Distinguished Service Award when they reached 25 years of service together. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center presented them with the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award.

On a national stage, they have been recognized as the longest running team to host the Children’s Miracle Network which raises money for children’s hospitals across the U.S. and in Canada. Karin has also won the CMN Miracle Story Award, recognizing her story telling as the best from all the stories that aired in CMN telethons across the country that year.
Since 1983, when Abner and Karin teamed up to host the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon in Lubbock, they have helped raise more than 22 million dollars for the Children’s Hospital at University Medical Center which serves West Texas.

Both Karin and Abner were named "Outstanding Alumni" by the Texas Tech College of Media and Communication.

Karin came to Texas Tech from Richardson High School in Dallas. But Abner is home grown. He is also an anomaly in the television news business. His entire broadcast career has been at one station. He says he will never apologize for staying home to achieve his goals… in the city he loves with an extended family, but especially his wife, Tara, and twin girls who are married now and each have given him a grandson.

Karin agrees that Lubbock was the right place to make a home for her family. She is married to Bill McCay and has two children, both married. She also has two grandchildren.

It was no accident that Abner and Karin were paired as a team in 1980 since they were already great friends. By 1990, KCBD had become a dominant number one in the news ratings for that market and have maintained that status to this day.
They have not only shared the news desk in the KCBD studio, but they have shared an office together in the newsroom for 39 years.
