TOSC 2024 Conference Speaker

Greg J. Huang, DMD, MSD, MPH
Kokich-Shapiro Endowed Professor

chair, department of orthodontics

associate dean for faculty

LECTURE TITLE: “Aligners: Past, Present and Future &

An Evidence-based Perspective on Obstructive Sleep Apnea”

Dr. Huang will describe the evolution of aligners, and review the current evidence on aligners, including topics like effectiveness, quality of life, root resorption, white spots, and periodontal health.  He will also discuss some current controversies, like sequential distalization, attachments, and molar intrusion. Throughout the lecture, he will present interesting clinical cases, illustrating the strengths and limitations of aligners.

His second lecture will address obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that we are much more aware of today.  Dr. Huang will review risk factors and treatments in kids and adults, and present current evidence from systematic reviews. Airway orthodontists have become very aggressive with their recommendations.  Are they grounded in good science?

Dr. Huang attended dental school at the University of Florida, and then received his Certificate in Orthodontics and MSD from the University of Washington in 1989.  He also holds an MPH in Epidemiology from UW.  Dr. Huang has been a faculty member at the University of Washington for almost 25 years, and he has served as the Chair of the Department of Orthodontics since 2008.   He has been a strong proponent of Evidence-based Orthodontics, and has conducted many clinical studies.  Dr. Huang is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, as well as an Angle Society member.  He has published more than 80 scientific articles, and is the editor of two orthodontic textbooks:  Evidence-based Orthodontics. 2nd edition, and Orthodontics: Current Principles and Techniques. 7th edition.  He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Orthodontics and Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, and he has also served as an Associate Editor for the AJODO. In 2020, he received the AAOF Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and Research Award.
